Notes: The French expression à la limite is extremely versatile - it's hard to pin down exactly what it means.

Il m'a poussé à la limite de ma patience.
He pushed me to the limits of my patience.

Nous achèterons deux valises, trois à la limite.
We'll buy two suitcases, three at the most.

À la limite, on croirait qu'il le fait exprès.
You'd almost think he's doing it on purpose.

Ce repas est à la limite du comestible.
This meal is barely edible.

J'irais chez ma mère à la limite.
In a pinch, I'd go to my mom's house.


You can use the French expression à la limite when you're not quite sure of how much of something you need, or when talking about possibilities. In this sense, it's synonymous with à la rigueur.

À la rentrée

Meaning: See you in September! See you this fall!

Literal translation: at the return

Notes: In August, major sectors of France slow down or close up shop completely. School is out, the government is more or less AWOL, and many restaurants and other businesses are closed as well. Therefore, many French people are on vacation for all or part of the month, which means that la rentrée, in September, is more than just students and teachers going back to school; it's also everyone else returning home and going back to work, returning to normalcy.

À la rentrée ! is a valediction, similar to bonnes vacances ! (have a nice vacation), a way of saying good-bye and an acknowledgement that you'll see the other person when you both re-enter the real world after your prolonged vacation.

You can also use à la rentrée as a reference to that point in time, to explain when something will happen, as in Je vais acheter une nouvelle voiture à la rentrée - I'm going to buy a new car in early September / when school starts back up / after I get back from vacation.

Expression: À la vôtre

Meaning: Cheers! To your health!

Literal translation: To yours!

Notes: The French expression à la vôtre is the most common way to toast people. It's a contraction of à votre santé, hence the feminine definite article la in the possessive pronoun la vôtre.

You can use à la vôtre with a group of people in an informal situation. In a more formal situation, whether talking to one person or to a group, it's better to say à votre santé.

The expression used to toast just one person in an informal situation is à la tienne.

Expression: À l'étage

Meaning: upstairs, downstairs

Literal translation: on/to the floor (of a multi-story building)

Register: normal

Notes: The French expression à l'étage isn't idiomatic, but since it can mean "upstairs" or "downstairs," depending on what it's used with, I thought it merited an explanation.

À l'étage on its own means "upstairs," and it can also refer specifically to the upper floor of a two-story building - for example, from the vantage point of someone standing outside talking about the upper floor. In France, this is also known as le premier étage; in the UK, "the first floor"; in the US, "the second floor." (See confusing number pairs for more info.)

But be careful, as different words can be added which make it mean "downstairs":

à l'étage du dessus / à l'étage au-dessus - upstairs, on the floor above
à l'étage du dessous / à l'étage en-dessous - downstairs, on the floor below

monter à l'étage - to go upstairs
monter à l'étage supérieure - to go up one floor, to the next floor
monter à l'étage (number) - to go up to the (ordinal number) floor

descendre à l'étage inférieur - to go down one floor
descendre à l'étage (number) - to down to the (ordinal number) floor

Meaning: about, around, approximately, pretty much, more or less

Literal translation: at little near

Notes: The French expression à peu près indicates that whatever phrase it precedes or follows is a rough guess or estimate. When used with numbers and amounts, à peu près is synonymous with environ and plus ou moins.

J'ai à peu près 10€ / J'ai 10€, à peu près.
I have about 10€.

Il pèse à peu près 20 kilos / Il pèse 20 kilos, à peu près.
It weighs about 20 kilos.

Tu as à peu près son âge / Tu as son âge, à peu près.
You're about the same age as he is.

À peu près is used with adjectives, nouns, pronouns, and clauses to describe something or someone as "approximately, more or less ___." Here, à peu près is synonymous with presque and plus ou moins.

Les résultats sont à peu près normaux.
The results are fairly / more or less normal.

Je suis à peu près certain.
I'm fairly / almost certain.

Ils sont à peu près les mêmes.
They're about / almost the same.

C'est à peu près tout.
That's about / pretty much all.

Je vois à peu près ce qu'il veut dire.
I kind of / pretty much / more or less see what he means.

The invariable compound noun à-peu-près refers to a vague approximation:
rester dans l'à-peu-près - to be very vague, to stick to vague approximations

Notes: The French expression à mon avis is perhaps the most common way to express one's opinion, other than simply saying je pense (I think). The possessive adjective can change to express the opinions of others as well:
