Program Highlights
Take your first step towards a career as a heavy equipment operator. Our reputation in this field and the hands-on experience you will obtain will help you to stand out from the crowd.
This 12-week program will prepare you for an exciting and demanding career in the operation and preventative maintenance of heavy construction equipment. The Heavy Equipment Operator program is all about hands-on learning . You'll develop the skills you need using bulldozers, rubber-tired loaders, tractor loader backhoes, hydraulic excavators, and various other construction site equipment. What you will learn in the classroom will focus on the essentials to help you master your operating skills. Courses include personal, work site and equipment safety, earthmoving technology, equipment maintenance, and heavy equipment operating techniques.
Program start dates: March 7, 2011; June 6, 2011; September 5, 2011; March 5, 2012; June 4, 2012; September 3, 2012. Tours of the Heavy Equipment Centre are available every Wednesday from 2:30pm to 4:30pm. Tours are approximately 30 minutes. If you want to operate heavy equipment - and have a responsible, safety-conscious attitude as well as an interest in working with others, you're on the right track. Other skills, abilities, and personality traits you should possess are:

- problem-solving ability
- self-discipline; ability to work independently
- willingness/ability to work as part of a team
Career Opportunities
When you've completed this program, you'll be able to work on construction worksites, quarries, in waste management or for municipalities. Your starting wage will be approximately $16.00 per hour and increase from there.
Minimum Admission Requirements
- OSSD with the majority of credits at the Workplace (E) level, including English.
When Workplace (E) is the minimum course level for admission, (C) and (U/C) courses are also accepted.
Mature Students
If you are 19 years of age or older before classes start, and you do not possess an OSSD, you can write the Canadian Adult Achievement Test to assess your eligibility for admission.
