Internship Position: Greenhouse Project InternThe SSVP Carbonear Foodbank is a community-minded organization that works diligently to meet the evolving needs of the people they serve. It is their mission to fill any identified gaps in services to meet the needs of their community. As a food bank, their primary function, they provide monthly food hampers to over 600 unique individuals across an area of over 350 kilometers. They also offer monthly community meals, a free clothing boutique, housing assistance, job search assistance, wifi and computer access, free income tax clinics, and much more. Additionally, this organization hosts a bi-weekly activity group for seniors with Alzheimer’s or dementia, an after school volunteer program for youth, and a variety of seasonal programming. They believe in neighbours helping neighbours and that everyone can play their part to help each other. It is their aim to ensure that everyone is fed, clothed, housed, and has access to the things they need to thrive in life.SSVP Carbonear Food Bank was selected as one of six sites across NL to take part in the Food Producer Forum’s Greenhouse Outreach Project. This is a collaborative project in which selected sites work to support each other in various ways. Each site has or will design an earth-sheltered greenhouse that is best suited for their needs to produce fresh, healthy, food. The earth-sheltered greenhouse is a unique design – being a marriage between a traditional greenhouse and a root cellar – that was created with the Newfoundland climate in mind. This project will develop a design that is tuned specifically to local needs and growing conditions. The food grown in the green house will support the community via foodbank activities and the space itself would be used to host educational workshops so the community can learn to produce their own food as well.This intern would be tasked with seeking and applying for funding for the construction of the earth-sheltered greenhouse, identifying and promoting the benefits of greenhouses for food security organizations, forming connections for possible community partnerships, and working with the organization on the prep for greenhouse construction. Activities and responsibilities will include:The focus of this internship will be seeking and applying for funding to support this project. This is a research based positionIdentifying and promoting the benefits of greenhouses for food security organizationsFostering connections for possible community partnershipsWorking with the organization on the prep for greenhouse construction.Other duties as required. Position is for 12 weeks starting on June 3rdRate of pay: $19.00/hr for 35 hours per week QualificationsStrong work ethic, attention to detail and excellent organizational skillsSuperior verbal and written communications skills, fluency in EnglishAbility to manage priorities and balance workloadKnowledge of non-profit organizations, greenhouse uses for food security or public outreachExperience in funding acquisition will be considered an assetComputer proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Outlook, and virtual meeting softwareHigh School diploma and/or relevant work experienceCommunity relations experience Additional ConsiderationsAccess to own laptop is requiredAccess to a vehicle with proper insurance is considered an asset but is not necessary for the position. Travel will be reimbursed when required to travel for work purposes.
