Peter Berdowski, CEO of Boskalis, which owns the salvage company Smit Salvage, stated that it could take "several weeks" to get the 'Ever Given' refloated. One of the problems was that the ship grounded at a nice speed at a time when there was high tide in the canal. The alternative - to send the ships south of Africa - costs more both in time and money. It will also have the potential to affect the already sky-high container rates, just as the price of oil may be affected.
The first salvage attempts have been focused on redistributing the ship's ballast and using the tide. But it is probably necessary to do more as there is a huge weight resting on the sand. The work will be a combination of reducing weight by removing containers, oil and water from the ship while tugs and dredgers continue their efforts. Removing containers is a challenge due to the enormous height of the stacks. Although high tide will help, it was also at high tide when the fully loaded ship ran aground at a speed of 13.7 knots.
SUEZ CANAL STILL BLOCKED
Thu Mar 25 09:02:56 CET 2021 Timsen
With the 'Ever Given' remaining hard aground the third day on March 25, now the offshore ships and tugs 'Ezzat Adel', 'Red Sea Brigand', 'Svitzer Port Said 1', 'Svitzer Port Said 2', 'Tahia Misr 1' and 'Tahia Misr 2' were on site for the salvage work. The Dutch salvage company Smit Salvage, a daughter company of Royal Boskalis Westminster NV, has been called in by the canal authority in Egypt to assist in pulling the ship free. an 8-person team was flown in at dawn on March 25 to board and inspect the vessel and the grounding site. A big part of the initial underwater assessment is how much the banks slope at that point in the canal. Japan’s Nippon Salvage Co. has also been hired to assist in the refloating work.
For now, the focus was on dredging around the vessel. The canal authority has dispatched two of its dredgers, the 'Mashor' and the '10th of Ramadan' to remove sand from underwater before rescuers attempt to pull the vessel. From the shore, excavators were also working around the vessel. The bulb was as much as five meters buried into the canal wall.
The two ships which were just behind the 'Ever Given', the 'Maersk Denver' and 'Asia Rubi III', were to be towed out of the canal to the anchorage to make room for the salvage work.
The ship has already created the world's largest maritime traffic jam north and south of the Suez Canal. On March 24 at midnight, up to 150 ships were waiting to pass in a northerly and southerly direction.
Regarding the cause of the accident it was thought a strong gust of wind slewed the container ship sideways across the canal. Winds of over 50 km/h were blowing at the time and a sandstorm was decreasing visibility.
The Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement, the company that manages the Ever Given, said the 25 crew member were safe and accounted for. The ship had two pilots from Egypt’s canal authority aboard the vessel to guide it when the grounding happened around 7:45 a.m. on March 23.
Insurance brokers at the P&I Club were preparing for claims that could run into the multi-million dollar range. They can come from the Suez Canal Authority, which is losing millions in lost revenue every day, and from other ships, which are also losing millions of dollar while waiting for the transit.
The plug in the Suez Canal comes at a critical time when well filled ships are sailing at record high rates that could risk becoming even higher due to the constipation. Figures from Kepler Cheuvreux showed that as many as 27 % of the global sea-transported container traffic passes through the canal.
CONTAINER SHIP PARTIALLY FREE - CANAL STILL BLOCKED
Wed Mar 24 18:52:04 CET 2021 Timsen
The tugs 'Abahgat', 'Baraka 1', 'Mosaheb 2', 'Salam 6', 'Salam 9', 'Svitzer Port Said 1', 'Svitzer Port Said 2', 'Tahia Misr 1' and 'Tahia Misr 2' managed to move the 'Ever Given' abit in the run of March 24. They tried to locate the ship along the canal fairway. But the traffic in the canal will not be released until the container ship has been towed to a safer position. Two dredgers were also involved in the opearation. There were already long queues of more than 100 ships on both sides of the grounded ship which is the largest ship which got stuck in the canal so far. There was a risk that the accident could send rates in the already scorching container market further up. It can take up to two days from the time the 'Ever Given' is pulled free and until the traffic in the canal has normalized.
