Duties
At installation sites, refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics:
• work from blueprints or verbal instructions to mount or place system components
• assemble and install refrigeration or air conditioning components such as compressors, condensers, evaporators and metering devices
• install and calibrate related controls (including wiring)
• start up systems, test lines to detect leaks and record the readings taken to ensure that the system is functioning satisfactorily.
Maintenance work involves:
• checking all parts of a system
• oiling moving parts
• keeping units filled with refrigerant
• adjusting valves.
When there is a malfunction, refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics diagnose the problem and fix the unit by replacing or repairing controls, electric wiring or other parts.
Mechanics also repair heating equipment, troubleshoot gas-fired equipment and calibrate gas-related controls.
Working Conditions
The working environment varies greatly from one job to another. Refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics work in compressor rooms and on roof tops as well as in clean, comfortable computer rooms. They normally work 40 hours a week on a year round basis.
Refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics may be required to lift and move items that weigh over 20 kilograms. There is some risk of injury when working with electricity, gases under high pressure and hazardous gases.
Personal Characteristics
Refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics need the following characteristics:
• mechanical ability
• good co-ordination and manual dexterity
• physical strength and stamina
• the ability to work well with co-workers and deal with customers.
They should enjoy variety, solving problems and working with little supervision.
Educational Requirements
To work in Alberta, a refrigeration and air conditioning mechanic must be ONE of the following:
• a registered apprentice
• a certified journeyperson
• someone who holds a recognized trade certificate.
To register with Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training, apprentices must:
• have an Alberta high school diploma with Pure or Applied Math 20, or *****alent, or pass the entrance exam.
• find a suitable employer who is willing to hire and train an apprentice. Most employers prefer to hire graduates of post-secondary technical programs, high school graduates who have good marks and an aptitude for science and mechanics, or people who have journeyman certification in other trades.
The term of apprenticeship is four years (four 12 month periods) that include a minimum of 1,500 hours of on-the-job training and eight weeks of technical training each year. High school students can earn credits toward apprenticeship training and a high school diploma at the same time through the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP).
Applicants who have related training or work experience may be eligible for credit or certification.
Refrigeration and air conditioning mechanic apprentices may take an interprovincial exam in the final period of their apprenticeship training to earn a Red Seal (certification recognized in most parts of Canada).
Technical training is arranged by Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training and, starting in September 2009, will be offered at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in Edmonton.
Outside the apprenticeship program, the following post-secondary institutions offer related training:
• the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) in Edmonton offers a one year Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Specialist certificate program and a one year Building Environmental Systems Technology (BEST) diploma program. The entrance requirement for HVAC program is Grade 11 English, Pure or Applied Math 20 and one of the following: Physics 20 (preferred), Science 20 or Chemistry 20. The entrance requirement for the BEST program is successful completion of the HVAC Specialist program or *****alent.
• the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) in Calgary offers a Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) certificate of achievement program through Continuing Education.
For current information about programs, admission requirements and mature student admission policies, please check post-secondary calendars or websites.
Pre-employment programs for prospective apprentices and continuing education programs for journeypersons may be offered on an as needed basis by the institution(s) listed above or other schools.
Employment and Advancement
Refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics usually work for companies that install and service air-conditioning and refrigeration systems. Some are self-employed.
Experienced refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics may advance to supervisory positions. Alberta certified journeyperson refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics who have the supervisory or management skills required by industry may apply for an Achievement in Business Competencies Blue Seal by contacting Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training.
In Alberta, 82 per cent of people employed as refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics work in the following industries:
• Construction
• Manufacturing
• Repair, Personal, Religious and Other Services.
The employment outlook in this occupation will be influenced by a wide variety of factors including:
• trends and events affecting overall employment (especially in the industries listed above)
• location in Alberta
• employment turnover (work opportunities generated by people leaving existing positions)
• occupational growth (work opportunities resulting from the creation of new positions that never existed before)
• size of the occupation.
Employment turnover is expected to increase as members of the baby boom generation retire over the next ten years.
Salary section revised JANUARY 2010Journeyperson wage rates vary but generally range from $23 to $32 an hour plus benefits (2009 estimate).
